Battle Sports Pavilion

Project Overview

Battle Sports Pavilion is a new build community facility located on North Trade Road, Battle. Commissioned by Battle Town Council and designed in collaboration with Hawkins and Hawkins, the project replaced an outdated pavilion that had served the recreation ground for decades.

The scheme had been in planning for over 14 years. Bellco Construction was appointed under a JCT Minor Works Building Contract with Contractor Design to deliver a fully coordinated design and build solution.
Works commenced 21st May 2025 and were completed on 19th December 2025, delivered on time and on budget with a contract value of £850,000.

Key elements included:

• Demolition of existing pavilion structure
• Extensive groundworks
• Installation of new foul drainage to replace defective systems
• Timber frame wall construction
• Truss roof structure
• Metal sheet roof covering
• Timber external cladding
• Full mechanical and electrical design and installation
• Complete internal fit out

The new pavilion provides:

• Two fully fitted changing rooms
• Dedicated officials room
• Internal WC facilities
• Two public toilets
• Disabled accessible toilet
• Café area
• Community room
• External landscaping and drainage works

The finished building provides modern, compliant facilities for local sports teams and the wider community.

Design and Build Responsibility

Under the Contractor Design element of the contract, Bellco Construction took full responsibility for:

• Structural design coordination
• Mechanical and electrical design
• Buildability reviews
• Value engineering
• Programme management
• Cost control

The ability to manage structural, M&E and compliance design internally was critical in maintaining programme certainty under a fixed price contract.

This project demonstrates our capability to operate as a structured, compliant main contractor within a public sector environment.

Working Within a Live Community Environment

The pavilion is located within an active recreation ground, adjacent to a play park and within 0.5 miles of two schools.

Key challenges included:

• Managing site safety within a live public environment
• Maintaining secure site boundaries
• Coordinating deliveries to minimise disruption
• Protecting neighbouring amenities
• Clear communication with residents and stakeholders

Community liaison formed a core part of our delivery strategy. Regular communication with Battle Town Council and local residents ensured transparency throughout the construction period.

Programme and Budget Control

Operating under a fixed price design and build contract required disciplined cost management and early coordination of specialist trades.

Through proactive planning, structured sequencing and strong supply chain relationships, the project was delivered:

• On programme
• Within contract value
• Fully compliant with Building Regulations
• Coordinated with all statutory bodies

The building was handed over ready for immediate community use ahead of the Christmas period in December 2025.
